A lamp socket is also called a lamp holder. It is the connection between the lamp (fixture) and the light source, i.e. the part where you turn the light source into the lamp. We have listed the 8 most common lamp sockets for you. Types beginning with the letter E are rotary sockets and types beginning with GU are plug-in socket.
E27
The large, most common rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 27 mm thick and suitable for 230V, i.e. most LED lamps.
E14
The small rotary socket. The thread / diameter is 14 mm thick, and thus suitable for the somewhat smaller LED lamps. Like the E27 lamp socket, it is suitable for 230V. You often see this lamp socket in ambient lighting such as table lamps.
G9
The G9 lamp socket is a plug-in socket with two loops with 9 mm spacing between them. This lamp socket is often found in smaller wall or ceiling lamps.
GU10
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting: two pins with 10 mm spacing between them. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used for spotlights and are suitable for 230V. The pins are inserted into the holes of the spotlight and the light source is fixed in place with a quarter turn.
GU5.3
These lamp sockets have two small metal pins with 5.3 mm spacing between them that conduct the current. They are also called bipin-foot or plug-in-foot sockets. Light sources with this lamp socket are mainly used in bathrooms, kitchens or outdoors because they are suitable for 12V, which is a safe voltage for wet areas. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source.
GX53
This plug-in socket has a bayonet fitting with pins spaced 53 mm apart. The lamp is fixed by pressing the light source into the fixture and then turning it a quarter turn. The GX53 lamp socket is mainly used for ceiling lamps.
G53
Many halogen spotlights use a G53 lamp socket. Nowadays, G53 LED spotlights are also available. It is a round lamp socket with pins at the bottom. Only the AR111 light source has a G53 lamp socket. The AR111 light source has a diameter of 111 mm and is mainly used in large surface-mounted and recessed spotlights on 12V. Please note that you always need a transformer for a 12V light source. The light source is fixed by screws or clamps.
A dimmable lamp has a built-in transformer in the lamp. This piece of electronics ensures that the lighting can be dimmed and the power is converted. As soon as it is indicated that a lamp is dimmable, you can assume that a transformer is also installed.
Lighting is often dimmable in lumen (brightness) and/or in Kelvin (color temperature). You determine with a dimmer how bright the lighting is or how warm white/cold white it is.
Dimmers that work on phase cut are often the best dimmers for LED lighting and are also energy efficient. The use of a standard dimmer causes problems with LED lamps, because they will then blink, buzz or vibrate. This causes damage to the lamp. Phase cut means that the lamp has a dimming range of 100%, you can dim the lamp until it is completely off.
Meaning icons
Dimmable in light intensity (lumen).
3-step dimmable. The light intensity goes from 100% (full light), to 60% and then to 30% (mood) light.
Dimmable in colour temperature (Kelvin). The warmth of the light colour can be adjusted.
The lamp has a touch dimmer.
The energy label of a product indicates how energy-efficient a product is with electricity. The energy labels run from A (dark green) to G (dark red), where lamps with energy label A are the most efficient and those with label G are the least efficient. You can find the energy label under specifications - light source.
Since the implementation of the new strict requirements for energy labels in September 2021, light sources have been given a relatively low energy rating. E, F and G are usually the energy labels that light sources are given, but they are just as economical as A, A+ or A++ used to be.
The energy consumption is shown at the bottom of the energy label on the product packaging. This is shown in kWh per 1000 hours. LED lights are often the most energy efficient light bulbs available.
The wattage of a lamp generally indicates the power needed to operate LED lighting. It has nothing to do with brightness, which is expressed in lumens. A lower wattage means a more energy-efficient lamp. Do you want to be sure your lamp is energy efficient? Then also check the energy label.
The exact meaning of wattage varies slightly depending on the type of lamp:
The total number of lumens indicates the brightness of a lamp. You adjust the number of lumens based on the size and function of the room. To help you out, here's an estimate of lumens per square meter for various rooms in your house.

The number of lumens for a lamp can be found in the product description and specifications. This ranges from 55 lumens to 3300 lumens.
The number of opburning hours indicates how long the lighting will last before you need to replace it. LED lamps generally last the longest: between 20,000 and 50,000 operating hours. Keep in mind that the lifespan depends on usage and environment.
The term Kelvin (K) refers to the color temperature of the light emitted by the lamp, and sometimes also to the color characteristics of the light itself. This affects the ambiance and functionality of the illuminated space. The Kelvin rating determines whether the light is warm, neutral, or cool.
Up to 2700K: Extra Warm White Light
2700K - 3000K: Warm White
3001K - 4000K: Neutral White
More than 4000K: Cool White
