Mirrors with lighting
Still in the dark?
In the bathroom you have to deal with moisture, condensation and sometimes direct contact with water. Therefore, you should not just hang a normal lamp intended for a dry room.
You should choose lamps that are especially suitable for damp rooms and meet the appropriate IP value (degree of protection against water and dust).
Normal ceiling lights or pendant lights without a watertight seal can be dangerous and are usually not permitted in the immediate vicinity of a shower or bath.
Since the bathroom is a damp room, it requires lighting that can withstand this. This is why there are special lamps with a so-called IP value. The higher this value, the better the lamp is protected against water and condensation.
For example, for the shower or directly over the bath you need at least IP65, while a lamp above the sink is often already sufficiently protected with IP44.
So choose your lighting not only for style, but also for safety: that way you can combine carefree use with beautiful design. Read all about IP ratings here.
Yes, in most cases bathroom lighting must be grounded. Earthing ensures that voltage is safely conducted away in the event of a defect or moisture problem. Especially with metal fixtures, grounding is mandatory for extra safety.
The total light output depends on the size of your bathroom:
- Small bathroom (± 4 m²): around 2,000-2,500 lumens.
- Average bathroom (± 6-8 m²): about 3,000-4,000 lumens.
- Large bathroom (10+ sqm): 4,500 lumens or more.
Tip: Distribute it over several light points (e.g. spotlights in the ceiling, mirror lighting, possibly wall lights) instead of one bright bulb. That way you get even light and avoid harsh shadows. Read all about Lumen here.
There are a few rules of thumb for spotlights in the bathroom:
- Distance between spots: usually ± 60 to 100 cm apart.
- Placement: make sure it is evenly distributed, and avoid shining a spotlight exactly over the head where you are standing in front of the mirror (this creates shadows).
- Accent lighting: use spotlights aimed at shower corners, bathtubs or alcoves for atmosphere.
- Functional light: place spotlights near washbasin/mirror with good color rendering (high CRI).
A useful diagram: place spotlights in a grid or in line with the bathroom layout, and if necessary combine them with wall lights or LED strips for a luxurious look. Read more about mounting recessed spotlights here.
