Transformer, transformer and driver: the difference

By Esther / September 10, 2024

When installing lamps, especially modern lighting systems like LEDs, you often come across terms like transformer, transformer and driver. Although they are sometimes used interchangeably, they have specific functions and applications.

The difference between a transformer, a transformer and a driver

Transformer and transformer:
A transformer and a transformer are basically the same thing; "transformer" is simply short for "transformer." A transformer is an electrical device that can increase or decrease the voltage of alternating current (AC)

Driver:
A driver is a device specifically designed to regulate the current going to an LED bulb. LEDs operate at a lower direct current (DC) voltage and have an engst and protect the LEDs from voltage spikes.

When to use a transformer for lighting?

A transformer, or transformer, is used to convert high alternating current into lower alternating current. For example, the 230-volt current in your home can be converted to 12 volts for recessed lights. The transformer reduces the current from 230 volts to 12 volts so the light source does not get too much current. Without a transformer, short circuits could occur due to the excessive voltage.

A good example of a transformer is the adapter of your laptop or the charger of your phone. In situations where safety is important, such as in bathrooms, outdoor lighting or environments with children, low voltage lighting is often chosen. Here the transformer plays an essential role by reducing the mains voltage to a safe level. This reduces the risk of electric shock and provides a safer environment.

Do you need a separate transformer for LED bulbs?

LED bulbs are popular because of their energy efficiency and long life. When installing LED lights, you may wonder if you need a separate transformer.

Whether you need a separate transformer for LED lamps depends on the type of LED lamp. LED lamps with a built-in driver do not need a separate transformer and can be connected directly to the mains voltage. For low-voltage LED bulbs without a built-in driver, you need a separate LED driver to provide the proper voltage and current. Always check the specifications of your LED bulbs to determine which solution you need.

Voltage loss

When a lamp suddenly emits less light, it may be due to voltage drop. Voltage drop occurs when the voltage reaching the lamp is lower than the voltage supplied by the transformer. The thickness of the installation cable plays an important role here. The thinner the cable, the hotter it gets and the more energy it loses. This increases the likelihood of voltage loss.

To reduce voltage drop, you can choose a thicker installation cable. A thicker cable has less resistance and loses less energy, which means more voltage is left for the lamp. It is also important to keep the cable as short as possible, because longer cables are more likely to lose energy.

The thinner the cable, the shorter the distance between the transformer and the light source may be. This is important to prevent the lamp from emitting less light than expected.
