All about cords and plugs

By Esther / September 10, 2024

Connecting a lamp to a switch or plug is one of the basic skills when working with electrical installations in the home. Whether you want to hang a new lamp or replace an existing one, connecting the wiring correctly is essential for a safe and functional installation. We walk through step-by-step how to connect a lamp to a switch or cord.

How to connect a lamp to a switch?

  • Step 1. Connecting a lamp to a switch starts by turning off the power at the main switch and checking with a voltage tester to make sure there is no current on the wires.
  • Step 2. Strip about one centimeter of insulation from the ends of the phase wire, neutral wire and, if necessary, the ground wire. Connect the phase wire (usually brown or black) to the input of the switch, marked "L" or "P". Connect the switch's outgoing wire to the lamp's phase wire.
  • Step 3. Connect the neutral wire (usually blue) directly to the neutral wire of the lamp. If a ground wire (green/yellow) is present, connect it also to the lamp's ground wire.
  • Step 4. Use terminal blocks for secure connections and mount the switch in the flush-mounted box. Attach the lamp to the ceiling or wall according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check that all connections are secure and insulate with electrical tape if necessary.
  • Step 5. Turn the power back on and test the lamp by turning the switch on and off. If everything is connected correctly, the lamp should now work.

How do I connect a plug to a lamp?

Attaching a plug to a wall lamp is very easy. To give you a hand we explain with the help of an installation video how to do it and what you need. With this you will surely succeed!

The difference between earthed and non-earthed plugs

Grounded vs. non-grounded plugs

The difference between grounding and non-grounding plugs lies in the grounding pin. A grounding plug has an extra pin for safe discharge of electricity to ground, which reduces the risk of electric shock and fire. These plugs are essential for larger appliances and metal enclosures.

Non-grounding plugs have no grounding pin and are usually suitable for smaller low voltage devices such as table lamps and chargers. They offer less protection, but are sufficient for devices that do not need extra protection.

Colors wires

When installing lighting, it is important to know how grounded and ungrounded cables differ. Grounded cables contain three wires: a yellow/green wire, a brown wire and a blue wire.

  • Yellow/Green wire: This is the ground wire, which conducts voltage and provides discharge. In damp rooms, this wire prevents short circuits and ensures that faulty appliances are safely discharged to earth.
  • Brown wire: This is the phase wire, which controls the power supply. This wire is always live and supplies the necessary energy to the device.
  • Blue wire: This is the neutral wire, which carries no voltage and carries current to ground.

When connecting a lamp, connect the ground wire to the yellow/green wire if your fixture has one. Use a terminal block to securely connect the wires to each other, make sure the power is off during installation.

Connecting a cord and plug to a lamp

Do you have a lamp without a plug, but would still like to connect it to a socket? This can be done very easily. You can easily connect a loose plug, with or without a switch, to the connector in the lamp.

Follow these steps to add a plug to your lamp:

  1. Prepare the lamp: Make sure the power is off before you start. Remove the lamp shade and make sure you have access to the connector inside the lamp.
  2. Connect the plug: Connect the wires from the plug to the terminal block. The phase wire (usually brown or black) and the neutral wire (usually blue) must be connected correctly. If a ground wire (green/yellow) is present, you need to connect the ground wire as well.
  3. Attach the wires: Make sure the wires are securely attached to the terminal block to avoid loose connections. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws in the terminal block securely.
  4. Route the cord neatly: To hide the cord tightly against the wall, use a file to make a notch in the fixture. This ensures that the cord runs neatly along the lamp and doesn't get in the way.
  5. Check everything: Make sure all connections are secure and that there are no exposed wires. Put the lampshade back in place.
  6. Turn the power back on: Turn the power back on and test the lamp by plugging it in and using the switch, if any.

With these simple steps, you can provide your lamp with a plug and easily connect it to an electrical outlet. This gives you the flexibility to place your lamp wherever you want without relying on fixed wiring.
