How do you connect a ground spotlight?

By Floris / March 18, 2024

A recessed spotlight is one of the most commonly used recessed lights for general lighting in your home. You can use it to fully illuminate a room, but you can also use it to create a nice atmosphere.

A ground spotlight is underground and can only be used on a flat surface. For example, in paving, in a wooden deck or in gravel.

Supplies

To make this job easy, you’ll need these tools. If you don’t already have the basic tools, we recommend checking out our handy starter kit:

  • Ground Spotlights
  • Gray ground cable
  • Cable Sleeve
  • Resin for waterproof connection
  • Gravel (minimum 30 cm)
  • Tools (shovel, possibly drill for making a well, pliers for attaching cables and glands)

Instructions

1. Installing a ground spotlight
Installing ground spots is not easy. If you are unsure about the installation, it is best to leave it to a certified installer. If you are going to install the ground spot yourself, there are a few things that are important to consider. Use a piece of gray ground cable to mount to the ground spot. At the bottom of the ground spotlight is the so-called swivel. This is the piece you use to attach the ground spot to the cord and this ensures that the ground spot is properly sealed.

2. Connect the cables with a cable sleeve
You connect the pieces of ground cable and the ground spots with each other with a cable sleeve. This also ensures that the connection of the various cables is watertight. A cable joint is a cable box with which you can connect two or more cables. You fill this cable box with resin to create a waterproof connection that you can safely place underground. Be sure to test your spotlights properly before you fill the cable box with resin. Once you fill the cable joint with resin, you cannot change anything about the connection. If your spots do not work then, you have a problem!

3. Choose the right surface
It is important that you never place ground spots in a pit or on a hump. They should be placed on a flat surface. Make sure you cover the pit in which you place the ground spotlight with a layer of gravel of 30 cm or more. This will allow precipitation to sink faster.

How do I connect a ground spotlight to a ground cable?

Ben how to connect a ground cable to a ground spotlight? Then read on quickly, because although it may seem complicated, it's actually surprisingly simple!

Supplies:

To connect a spotlight to a ground cable, you need the following supplies. Don't own these tools yet? Check out our handy starter kit!

  • Ground spotlight
  • Ground Cable
  • Waterproof junction box
  • Waterproof cable connectors
  • Scissors or pliers for wire stripping
  • Screwdriver
  • Insulating tape (optional)

Roadmap:

  1. Preparation: Make sure the power is off before starting the installation to avoid electric shock. This can be done by turning off the circuit breaker or fuse in the switch box that supplies power to the area of installation.

  2. Determine location: Determine the optimal location for the ground spotlight and make sure it is level and free of obstacles. Dig a trench in the ground from the location of the ground spotlight to the point where the power source is located. Make sure the trench is deep enough to fully bury the ground cable and provide protection from damage.

  3. Lay the ground cable: Place the ground cable in the slot and make sure it lies firmly and straight without kinks. The cable should be of sufficient length to comfortably connect to the ground spot and power source.

  4. Cable preparation: Strip off about 1-2 centimeters of the outer insulation of the ground cable using scissors or wire stripping pliers so that the individual conductors are visible.

  5. Connecting to the ground spot: Connect the individual conductors of the ground cable to the appropriate connection points of the ground spot. These can be screw terminals, cable connectors or other connection methods, depending on the specific design of the ground spotlight.

  6. Make waterproof connection: Use waterproof cable connectors to seal the connection between the ground cable and the ground spotlight and protect it from moisture and corrosion. Make sure the connection is tightened securely to ensure a reliable electrical connection. To provide additional protection, you can use insulating tape to further seal and insulate the connections from moisture and other environmental influences.

  7. Testing: After the connection is made and securely sealed, turn the power back on and test the ground spotlight to make sure it works correctly. Also check for any leaks or problems with the connection.

  8. Finish: Cover the ground cable and any exposed sections with soil or other suitable material to protect them from damage and to achieve a neat finish.

How many ground spots do you need per m2?

The number of ground spots you need per square meter depends on how bright you want the lighting to be and how large an area you want to illuminate. In general, you can count on about 3 to 6 ground spots per square meter for even lighting. But it's best to see for yourself and experiment with the positions before final installation. That way you can properly estimate the lighting effect before you fix everything.
