By Floris / March 4, 2024
Hanging a lamp won't be a problem anymore with our instructions. Here we explain step-by-step how to hang and connect different types of lamps. So you never have to ask yourself the question "How do I hang a lamp?" or "How do I connect a lamp?" again.
Hanging a lamp is often a job that seems more complicated than it is. How do I connect a lamp?" and "How do I hang up a lamp?" are frequently asked questions. We have put together assembly instructions so you can easily hang your new lamp yourself. From hanging lamps to ground spots, you'll find all the information you need here!
How do I connect a lamp?
In general, most lamps work on the same principle of connection, with a terminal block and wiring coming from the ceiling or wall. When buying a lamp, it is wise to check which connection you have. Are the right wires coming from the ceiling? Is there enough room to hang the mounting bracket?
It is also wise to check if you have the right tools to hang your lamp. In most cases you can get by with just a screwdriver, but there are exceptions. Should you need a screwdriver for your particular lamp, you can always ask the handy neighbors!
Tools
To connect most light fixtures, it’s helpful to have these tools. When it comes to lighting, our fixtures always come with the right screws and anchors, as well as a terminal block. If you don’t already have the right tools, check out our starter kit:
- A voltage detector
- A cable stripper
- A screwdriver
- Screws and plugs
- Possibly a impact drill
- A screwdriver
Instructions
In general, most lamps follow the same steps for hanging. Please note, there can always be exceptions. Check out the appropriate instructions for your specific lamp at the bottom of this page.

1. Turn off the power: Make sure you turn off the power before you get started connecting your lamp. You do this by turning off the power of the group to which the lamp connection point is connected. Use a voltage detector to check that there is no longer any voltage on the wires. If the light on the voltage detector is not lit, the power is completely off.
2. Wire stripping: Now we are going to attach the electrical wires. If the wires are already stripped, go to step 3. You start by stripping the electrical wires. This means removing the plastic around the wire. Using the stripper, strip 0.5 cm of the brown and blue wire bare.
3. Identify the wires: Dutch wiring systems normally use three colors: brown for phase (L), blue for neutral (N) and yellow-green for ground. The terminal block has two or three openings. Two of them are for the brown and blue wire. In the middle is often another opening for the ground wire (the yellow-green wire). If your pendant lamp is grounded, attach this wire to the terminal block as well. Insert the wires into the openings and screw them on with a screwdriver.
4. Connecting the wires: The brown wire from the lamp, which represents the phase (L), is connected to the brown wire in the center box. This is often done using a terminal block or other suitable means of connection. The lamp's blue wire, representing neutral (N), is connected to the blue wire in the center box in a similar manner. The yellow-green wire of the lamp, which represents grounding, is connected to the yellow-green or green-yellow wire in the center box. This wire provides safety grounding for the device.

5. Attach the bracket: Using a screwdriver or screwdriver, screw the bracket to the socket in the ceiling. The holes of the socket may not match the bracket. You can use a impact drill to drill additional holes in the ceiling to attach the bracket. Attach the lamp to the mounting bracket. You usually do this by tightening the lamp's connector cap to the mounting bracket with two screws on the side.
6. Screw the bulb: Screw the bulb into the socket of the pendant lamp. On the packaging of the lamp you will find the type of light source you need. You can find and purchase the right light source on our website. After attaching the light source, turn the power back on to the group and check that the lamp works. And voilà, you have successfully hung and connected your lamp!
What happens when you connect a lamp the wrong way round?
When a lamp is incorrectly connected, it can cause several problems. One common problem is that the lamp simply does not turn on. This can happen when the wires are not connected properly and electricity cannot flow through the lamp properly.
Another problem can be that the lamp flickers or flickers irregularly. This is often due to a bad connection in the electrical wiring or a short circuit in the circuit. In rare cases, a bad connection can even cause the wiring to overheat, which can be dangerous.
It is therefore important to connect the wiring correctly to ensure that the lamp works safely and properly. If you are not sure how to do this, it is wise to seek help from a professional to ensure that everything is installed safely.
