IP values in the garden

By Lisa / April 25, 2024

Everyone dreams of an enchanting garden full of light. Think of lamps illuminating the paths, a fountain sparkling at night, or just a cozy patio. With garden lighting, you create your own outdoor paradise.

But how do you get started? Let's look at some important aspects, such as IP ratings, that play an essential role in creating the perfectly lit garden.

IP values in the garden. How it works.

When choosing lighting for your garden, you will often come across the term IP rating. But what does this actually mean? The first digit indicates how well a device is protected from solids such as dust and dirt, while the second digit indicates how well it is protected from moisture and water. In the garden, these values are crucial because outdoor electrical devices are exposed to different weather conditions.

Outdoor lighting is specifically designed for outdoor use and have an appropriate IP rating to withstand the elements. So this is not true of all lamps. If you want to use a lamp that is not specifically designed for outdoor use, check the IP rating first. If the lamp is not suitable for outdoor use, it could cause damage. By choosing lamps with the correct IP rating, you can ensure that your garden lighting will withstand the elements and last a long time.

Tip: Lamps with a suitable IP rating for the bathroom, for example, can also be suitable for outdoor use, and vice versa. So check the IP value carefully and find your perfect lighting!

The IP values of outdoor lamps

When selecting outdoor lighting, it is crucial to consider the IP ratings of the lamps. These IP ratings indicate how well the lights are resistant to moisture and water, which is essential for maintaining functionality and safety in various outdoor environments. Let's take a look at some of the most common IP ratings and how they translate to specific garden applications:

  • IP21: Drip-proof - IP21 is suitable for covered areas where lighting does not have direct contact with water, such as porches or under canopies.
  • IP23: Rainproof - IP3 is designed to withstand light rain, but must be protected from direct exposure to heavy precipitation.
  • IP44: Splash-proof - IP44 is ideal for use in sheltered outdoor areas where the lights may be exposed to splashing water, such as under an awning or covered patio.
  • IP54: Splashproof and dustproof - IP54 is suitable for environments where the lights may be exposed to both moisture and dust, such as near flower beds or in a garden shed.
  • IP65: Protected against water jets - IP65 is perfect for areas susceptible to direct exposure to water jets, such as along a garden pond or fountain.
  • IP67: Dustproof and submersion protected - IP67 is ideal for pond lighting or other areas where the lights may be submerged in water for short periods of time.
  • IP68: Dustproof and protected from being underwater - IP68 is designed to withstand all weather conditions, perfect for installation in fountains, water features or other wetland environments.

Summary: For garden lighting, it is advisable to choose lamps with an IP65 or higher rating. These are resistant to rain, splashing water and humid conditions. By choosing the right IP rating for the specific zones in your garden, you can ensure that your lighting performs optimally and lasts long, even in the most challenging conditions. Learn more about the different zones in your garden below!

Zones in the garden

By choosing the right IP rating for the specific areas in your garden, you can ensure that your lighting performs optimally and lasts a long time, even in the most challenging conditions.

  • Zone 1
The garden can be divided into several zones. Zone 1 contains lighting that is directly exposed to all weather conditions. These lights must be able to withstand rain, wind and even hail. Therefore, a high IP rating is essential, with at least IP65. If you want to place lights in the pond, you need even a higher IP rating, at least IP67. This type of lighting can be safely submerged in water.
  • Zone 2
Zone 2 is the zone where the lights are placed directly against the house. This gives it some shelter, but the lights still hang and stand fairly open. Therefore, at least IP44 is recommended for this zone.
  • Zone 3
Zone 3 is the last zone and this zone includes all lighting that is suspended under shelter. Consider spotlights under the fascia, lighting in a covered balcony or under a porch. Although these lights are not directly exposed to the elements, they often encounter moisture. Therefore, lights in this zone require at least IP23.
