All about the sound level of a ceiling fan
By Sanne / July 19, 2024
The noise level of a ceiling fan can vary. It depends on the model and the speed at which they run. When choosing a quiet ceiling fan, it is important to look at the noise level. This is measured in decibels (dB) and is listed in the specifications. But what exactly does this mean and what does it mean?
How many dB for a ceiling fan?
The sound level of a fan is measured in decibels (dB), which is the unit for sound intensity. The amount of decibels a fan produces can vary depending on the type of fan, size, speed and environmental conditions. In general, fans produce noise levels ranging from about 30 dB to 70 dB or even higher, depending on how powerful and efficient they are. Ceiling fans are considered quiet when their noise level is below 50 dB. For reference:
- 25-35 dB: Whisper quiet, comparable to the sound of leaves rustling.
- 35-45 dB: Quiet, similar to a library or a soft conversation.
- 45-55 dB: Moderate noise, comparable to rainfall or normal conversation.
A fan at lower speed will usually produce less noise than a fan at higher speed.

What is a quiet ceiling fan?
When looking for the perfect ceiling fan for a quiet and cozy atmosphere, it is important to consider more than just the noise level in decibels. For example, it is a good idea to consider a fan's speed settings. If the fan spins faster, it will also produce more noise. For easy operation, choose a ceiling fan with a remote control. Lighting options can also make a difference. Many modern fans have integrated LED lighting that is not only energy efficient, but also allows you to adjust the mood of the room.
Some of our favorite quiet ceiling fans:

1. Ceiling fan white incl. LED with remote control -. Clima
- Noise levels per setting: 50 dB, 60 dB, and 70 dB.
- This fan has integrated LED lighting and is operated by remote control.

2. Ceiling fan steel with remote control - Rotar
- Noise levels per setting: 25 dB, 30 dB, and 35 dB.
- This model is made of steel with wood and has easy operation with a remote control.

3. Modern ceiling fan black with remote control incl. LED - Vifte
- Noise level: between 34 dB and 45 dB.
- This fan has both summer and winter modes, making it usable all year round. It comes with a remote control and integrated dimmable LED lights.
which fan is the quietest?
An AC motor, short for AC motor, is an electric motor that operates on alternating current (AC). A DC motor, short for DC motor, is an electric motor that runs on direct current (DC). It is a type of motor in which electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy, resulting in rotation of the motor's shaft. But what is the quietest choice for a fan?
Despite the large selection of super quiet fans with AC motors, DC motors are often a little quieter, due to the following points:
- Fewer mechanical noise sources: DC motors generally have fewer mechanical parts that produce noise during operation. For example, they do not have slip rings like some AC motors, which can cause friction and generate noise.
- No mains frequency noise: AC motors operate at mains frequency (e.g. 50 Hz or 60 Hz), which can create buzzing noise. DC motors, on the other hand, operate on direct current without the variable frequency that occurs with AC, making them quieter in their electrical operation.
- Less vibration: DC motors often have less vibration than AC motors. Vibrations can cause noise by causing other structures or surfaces in their surroundings to resonate, adding to the noise level.
- Design features: The design of DC motors may be specifically aimed at minimizing noise. For example, the placement of the brushes and commutator can be optimized to reduce noise.
Lampandlight has several quiet ceiling fans with a DC motor. Here are some of our favorites:
