Installing garden lighting: tips & tricks

Make a lighting plan
You probably already have an idea in your head as to where you want to place your garden lamps, but if you want the landscaping to fall into place it is important to put pen to paper and draw yourself a lighting plan. Think carefully about where you want your light to fall and what aspects of your garden you wish to highlight. Plan out where you need to lie your cables if you are using ground garden lights. Always keep your lighting plan after the construct is complete so you know exactly where the cables are located.
What is the type of garden lighting you need?
There are several different lighting solutions that could be suitable for your garden. You can choose to stick with traditional energy savings lamps or explore the LED options - which are now more on the rise these days.LED garden lighting has the advantage of keeping very energy efficient and have a longer life span than there energy saving counterparts. Another good solution for you may be solar powered garden lighting. The great thing about solar powered lighting is you don't have to worry about cable laying therefore your garden planning can become alot easier.
What voltage to choose?
Garden lighting will either be low voltage (12 volts) or high voltage (230 volts). With garden lighting of 230 volts it is very important that you lay the cabeling at a depth of at least half a meter. This is for safety reasons so that no accidental contact can be made with a live cable if you are working in the garden. 12 volt garden lighting does not need to be as deep because the voltage is obviously considerably lower. 12 volt garden lighting is usually sufficient with giving off enough light, however it is mainly used for atmospheric mood lighting.
Important things to be aware of prior to installation.
To build a 12 volt garden lighting system is very simple. You just need a transformer, ground cables and your chosen garden lamps. With a connector your can easily connect your lamps to the cables. Connecting a 230 volt garden lighting system is a lot less simple and therefore if you do not have experience then we always advise that an electrician is hired. Also another thing to consider is that it is much harder to install a 230 volt garden system in a garden that is already finished due to needing to dig up 50cm worth of soil to lay ground cables.
